Sheriff L. David Huffman was elected Sheriff of Catawba County, NC in 1982. He previously served Catawba County as a County Commissioner from 1978 to 1982. He is a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association, where he serves on the Board of Directors, the Law Enforcement Committee, the Congressional Affairs Committee, the Law and Legislative Committee, the Chaplains Advisory Committee, and the Weapons of Mass Destruction Committee. His is a member of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association, where he serves as Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Chaplains’ Association.
For 17 of the past 18 years, Sheriff Huffman has received national awards from either the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) or the National Association of County Commissioners (NACO) for innovative programs and projects he has initiated through the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. He started the second TRIAD Organization in the nation. The Catawba County Church Arson Prevention Task Force that he started in 1996 was the first of its kind in the country, founded on the basis of prevention as opposed to investigation. He and members of his department were featured in a training film entitled “The Burnings,” produced by the National Sheriffs’ Association in conjunction with the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
As a result of his insight President Clinton appointed him to the National Hate Crimes Commission in 1997. In the Fall of 1997 he garnished enough local support and state and federal funding to establish a Conflict Resolution Center for Catawba and Burke Counties of North Carolina, for which he won a 1999 NACO Achievement Award. Recently, in response to the alarming number of child fatality cases around the nation, he initiated “Trigger Lock”, a program to offer individuals who apply for handgun permits coupons from Walmart that entitles them to purchase trigger locking devices for their firearms at substantially discounted prices.
Born and raised in Catawba County, he attended St. Stephens High School and Catawba Valley
Community College. He is a graduate of the National Sheriffs’ Institute at the FBI National Academy. He was an account executive with Mortorola for approximately seven-years. He is a 32nd degree Shriner, and is a member and deacon of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Conover, NC. Sheriff Huffman and his wife, Dianne, have four daughters, three of whom have completed college, and the fourth is a rising junior at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.
